Hair education · Source and grade

Raw, Remy and virgin hair are not interchangeable.

Know what hair-grade terminology does—and does not—tell you before buying extensions, wigs or bulk bundles.

What is Remy hair?

Remy generally refers to human hair collected and arranged so the cuticle layers point in a consistent direction. Cuticle alignment is often important for detangling and the feel of a finished product. The label alone does not establish a particular origin, processing method or ethical certification.

What is raw hair?

Raw hair commonly means hair that has undergone little or no chemical processing. Definitions vary between suppliers, so buyers should ask what the lot has actually been through: washing, sorting, steam styling, coloring, bleaching or other treatments.

What is virgin hair?

Virgin hair usually describes hair that has not been chemically altered, but standards and trade usage are inconsistent. Do not infer that every product labeled virgin was never styled, treated, or mixed.

What is Indian temple hair?

Temple hair refers to hair associated with donation and collection at Indian temples. After collection, auction, trading and processing may involve multiple companies. Request the available origin records for the individual lot rather than relying on a blanket website statement.
